| What Do You Mean
By Healthy
Mind?
|
|
When we
discuss a healthy mind, we are discussing a mind that is in the right mode
to support our positive lifestyle. This is a mind that is strong,
ready for stimulus, and prepared to meet the joy of everyday living.
It is a mind that is positive, has a curiosity and a joy for the day.
It is a mind that will support you in your quest for a fuller and stronger
life.
Your healthy
mind is able to cope with the challenges and problems that confront you.
When you get bad news, a difficult problem, your coping skills are
intact. And a healthy mind can keep going, to go that extra mile
when you need to stretch it to finish that "all-nighter" project. It
doesn't let you down, but thrives on a challenge.
A well
exercised brain is essential to your long-term mental capabilities.
Study after study has shown that a well exercised and stimulated brain has
significantly improved memory capabilities, especially as we age,
A healthy
mind also can relax and enjoy life, enjoy quiet moments, and see the
beauty that is in the world around us.

| How Do I Know
If I Have A Healthy Mind? |
|
You have a healthy mind if:
 |
You can give and accept support and compliments
|
 |
You seek out stimulation and mental challenges - stretching
is fun.
|
 |
You are aware of the world around you and can see the
beauty in the world
|
 |
You can manage stress
|
 |
You identify your moods and deal with them
|
 |
You are at peace with
yourself
|
If you aren't having fun in your life, if you are not
laughing every day, then perhaps you are taking things too seriously.
Enjoy the day – life was not meant as a struggle, life was meant to be
enjoyed!

| What Can I Do
to Improve My Mental Health? |
|
Everyone can
improve their mental health. Like all health matters, it requires
exercise and learned patterns. An unused brain does not work well,
and studies have shown that your brain is definitely a "use it or lose
it" proposition.
 |
First of all,
you must exercise your brain. Crossword puzzles, card games, and
word games all improve your mental capabilities.
|
 |
Keep involved
with current affairs. Attend lectures and listen to radio programs
that deal with stimulating subjects
|
 |
Keep your mind
open. Make sure you listen to an entire statement before you begin
to form your answer!
|
 |
Accept
compliments. When someone compliments you, there is only one correct
response - say "Thank-you"
|
 |
Practice finding
the good in anyone and any situation. When things don't go your way,
take up the pieces and make the best you can out of the situation.
|
 |
If you have trouble relaxing, you may want to consider
meditation or yoga. There are many techniques that are available.
Although most take some time to learn, once learned, they will be
wonderful oases of tranquility for you. Try listening to calming music
or reading a good book. Progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery
(yes, it okay to daydream!). |
